Elegance in an Age of Social Transformation
The 19th century was a period of radical stylistic change, reflecting revolutions, industrial growth, and the rise of the bourgeoisie. Clothing became the ultimate expression of formal rigor, taste, and social status.
Women’s fashion evolved through dramatic silhouettes: beginning with the neoclassical elegance of the Regency era (high waistlines and light fabrics), then expanding into the grand volumes of the Crinoline period (mid-century), and finally transitioning into the vertical lines and tournure drapery of the Victorian age. Heavy fabrics such as taffeta and velvet, along with deep, sober colors, dominated balls and evening receptions.
Men embraced the uniform of the modern gentleman. Gone were lace and bright colors; instead, the evening wardrobe revolved around the tailcoat and later the tuxedo, while daytime attire featured the frock coat or morning coat. Male elegance was now defined by impeccable tailoring and the superior quality of the cloth.
