Luxurious fabrics—embossed velvets, gold and silver brocades, and Italian damasks—were often cut to reveal the underlying linings in a colorful play known as creasing or slashings.

Courtly women displayed majestic gowns with wide skirts supported by structures, tightly fitted bodices, and square necklines. The richness of fabrics, often imported from Venice or Florence, was amplified by precious jewelry. Clothing was both an investment and a symbol of family prestige.
